You love animals. We need you!
Being a volunteer for the Humane Society of Genesee County is one of the most important jobs you can do. Because of our valued volunteers, we are able to make sure our dogs are walked on a regular daily basis, our cats are petted and pampered, and our shelter looks warm and welcoming.
To be chosen as a volunteer for the Humane Society of Genesee County is an honor. That means you possess the skills that will impact an animal in a positive way. It means that you are willing to devote the time necessary to learn our values and mission. It means that you are a person that cares about making a difference in your community, at a time when life can be more hectic just “getting things done that need to be done.”

Please print out the application from your computer (forms are also available by request at the Humane Society.) You must include a copy of your tetanus vaccine, personal ID or driver’s license, a copy of your medical insurance card, along with the completed application, and mail to the address on the application.
There will be a $25.00 fee for an individual volunteer, ages 16 years and up (payable at orientation.) Please do not include the payment with your application. After all applications are reviewed, you will be notified regarding volunteer status. For safety and liability purposes, we reserve the right to deny volunteer applications submitted to HSGC.
These are the positions available for volunteering:

Dog Walking
The Humane Society of Genesee County needs experienced dog handlers who want to stay fit and benefit our shelter dogs! Dog walkers must be able to handle dogs with lots of energy, understand safety alerts and animal body language. In addition, we need volunteers to brush and fluff our dogs to make them beautiful and ready for adoption. Dog walkers must adhere to the policies and procedures of the Humane Society.
Cat Socializing and Care
We are in need of volunteers who love to work with cats! As a volunteer working with our shelter cats, your job will be to brush, pet and exercise our feline friends. You will also be scooping litter boxes and making fun catnip toys for our cats to enjoy. You should have a firm knowledge of cat behavior and cat body language.
Special Events, Committees and Fundraising
We depend on generous donors to be in existence. If you have an outgoing personality, marketing and/or event planning experience, we need you! You will learn about our mission by attending our orientation and receive advanced training from our Community Relations Coordinator.
Morning Cage Cleaning
This is an “in the trenches” volunteer job that requires you to be on a regular schedule. You must start at either 8:00 or 9:00 am, and stay until 11:00. It requires you to work with bleach and other cleaning chemicals, as well as scrub brushes and a lot of elbow grease! This is a great job for anyone who is interested in a career with animals to know what it really involves to maintain animals in a shelter situation. Must be age 18 and up and willing to commit to minimum of 1 day a week.
Newspapers, Dishwashing and Laundry
This is a necessary mainstay of the Humane Society volunteer program. As a volunteer for this position, you will be responsible for unfolding newspapers for our cages, washing dishes as needed and folding laundry.
Volunteer Workshops
Periodically, we will offer workshops on Pet Therapy (taking animals to assisted-living facilities) and Pet Fostering (caring for puppies or kittens at your home.) You must be a current volunteer and have a minimum of 10 documented HSGC volunteer hours prior to attending workshops.
All upcoming volunteer events, workshops and news will be featured in our monthly “People and Pets” Newsletter! The newsletter is sent via email, unless otherwise requested.
